If you have the time, the best way to see the Great Barrier Reef is on board a liveaboard dive or snorkel trip.
A liveaboard trip allows you to maximise your diving or snorkelling time – and you get to sleep on the reef! There are a number of vessels that operate from Cairns offering a wide range of trips. These trips can range from 2 – 11 days. Similar to hotels, there are different standards of accommodation on different vessels, from budget to luxury.
The other main difference is where the trips actually go to. Although all diving from Cairns is on the Great Barrier Reef, the general rule of thumb is the further away from land you go, the better the diving. The downside to this is longer travelling time and the further you travel, the more expensive the trip becomes.
Ribbon Reef Explorer - 4 Days
The Ribbon Reefs run parallel to the coastline and offer a huge range of stunning dive sites. These reefs are visited by fewer operators than the Outer Barrier Reef and as such are in pristine condition. The diving just doesn’t get any better than this!!
Day 1 (Thursday):
Your journey starts here! Pick up from your city accommodation will be at 6:30am to board TAKA, our home on the reef for the next four days. Once we have you checked in, you may sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride to the Outer Great Barrier Reef. You will have the opportunity to participate in up to four dives and unlimited snorkelling at Saxon and Norman Reef, which also includes a night dive with the Reef Sharks! Overnight we will steam up to the spectacular Ribbon Reefs.
Day 2 (Friday):
Wake up to the sun rising over the Great Barrier Reef. Today you will have the opportunity to explore some of the most pristine and untouched areas of the spectacular Ribbon Reefs. The Ribbon Reefs are home to many tropical fish species and offers magnificent viewing of bright mesmerising coral less frequented by any other boats. Today you will enjoy four dives at various sites, including one night dive, where the reef transforms itself into a completely different setting with all new nocturnal marine life just waiting to meet you.
Day 3 (Saturday):
We kick the weekend off with more diving and snorkelling opportunities throughout the Ribbon Reef and Agincourt Reef systems. Four dives are included in today’s itinerary, including another night dive! No two dives are the same. Thanks to the unique nature of the Ribbon Reefs; there are always more areas of this natural wonder to explore and more underwater marine life to meet! After our night dive, we will steam back down south to Norman Reef.
Day 4 (Sunday):
Today we visit Norman and Saxon Reef where we enjoy three daytime dives. On completion of our final dive, we will make our way back to the mainland; reminiscing of the trip of a lifetime. We will arrive back in Cairns at approximately 3:30pm where we will drop you off at your city accommodation.
